Gas Transfer Pump:

These types of pump transfer gas molecules from the inlet of the pump to the outlet by positive displacement or by the momentum transfer. The compression ratio is the ratio of outlet pressure to the inlet pressure.

These types of pump divided into two categories:

• Positive displacement pump and
• Momentum transfer pump

Positive Displacement Pump:

Positive displacement pump creates a low vacuum. This type of pump works mechanically, trapping a known volume of gas and moving it between the pumping elements.

It is designed in several steps on a single drive shaft, the separated volume is compressed to a lower volume at a higher pressure, and it expelled the compressed gas to either the next pump or atmosphere. It uses some times two transfer pumps in series to provide a higher flow rate and vacuum.

Positive displacement pump expands a cavity on the suction side and a compress cavity on the discharge side. Fluid flows into the pump as the cavity on the intake side expands and fluid flows out of the discharge as the cavity compressed. The volume is constant for each cycle of operation.

Positive displacement pumps are divided into two main types:

Momentum Transfer Pumps:

Momentum transfer pump uses high speed rotating blades to direct the gas molecules out of the chamber. This type of pump also called Molecular pump, which can achieve a high compression ratio at low pressure.

In conjunction with one or two positive displacement pumps, a molecular pump(momentum transfer pump) is the most workable tool to achieve high vacuums.

The two main classes of momentum transfer pumps are:

• Diffusion pump
• Turbo molecular pumps

Entrapment Vacuum Pumps:

Entrapment vacuum pumps captivate gas molecules on the surface within the vacuum system.

These pumps function at a lower flow rate than other vacuum pumps, however, they provide ultra-high vacuum, down to 10-12 Torr.

Using cold temperature entrapment pumps condensed gas molecules to an absorbed state, then these molecules create a thin film which is removed by the entrapment pumps. It is most effective when it’s positioned into the container.
