How Does A Rotary Piston Pump Work?

A rotary piston pump is one type of hydraulic pump, which is made with a piston, a chamber and few control devices. As the input and output valves, these pumps use the check valves.

The rotary piston pump is a two-sided positive displacement pump which can transport high volume oils and thick liquids such as tars. A rotary piston pump can handle up to 20,000cst and up to 300 degree Celsius temperature.

These pumps employ by flowing down into the chamber, thus decreasing the media within a hand pump. When the air pressure exceeds from the opening valve, then the lower media can be sent through the exit valve. As the piston is drained back up, then it frees the inlet valve and shuts the outlet valve. In this article, we’ll discuss an overview of the working principle of the rotary piston pump.

Working Principle Of The Rotary Piston Pump:

The rotary piston pump working principle is similar to the positive displacement pumps as they work with the pumping mechanism force to enhance the volume of the liquid.

These pumps contain over one piston with a set of control systems. The double pump involves two pistons and two controlling systems. Likewise, a triplex piston pump has three pistons with three controlling devices.

It is a vital point to check the controlling systems on two sides to assure that the direction of the liquid flow at both sides is flowing or not.

Rotary piston pumps are generally either single-acting or double-acting pumps. The double-acting rotary piston pumps include two series of controlling devices and liquid on both sides. This allows the rotary piston pumps to complete a cycle of pumping by flowing in the one direction to another direction.

When the piston is leading one direction, it will exhaust another side.

Advantages & Disadvantages Of Rotary Piston Pumps:

Advantages of a rotary piston pump:

  • Efficiency is high
  • Flow rate is low
  • Reliability is high
  • Without moving the flow rate force can be managed
  • Can take the high load at low speed because of the hydrostatically balanced parts possible

Because of the hydrostatic balance part, rotary piston pump can work with different type hydraulic like biodegradable oil, HFC, HFD, HFA.

Disadvantages of a rotary piston pump:

  • High maintenance and operating cost
  • Can handle a lesser flow rate
  • Pulsating flow.

This is all about the rotary piston pump which is used for empowering heavy machines as the small machines. Application of rotary piston pumps includes:

  • Use as hydraulic equipment
  • In high-pressure units
  • Hydraulic suspension control etc
